That mind-set led Ms. Pitter to open her first bridal salon, Pantora Bridal, located in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, in 2013 (in 2018 she opened the current location in Bedford-Stuyvesant). Although her boutique was closed in March for four months because of the coronavirus pandemic, she was still able to accommodate her clients with virtual appointments. Her expertise lies in her ability to emphasize a curvaceous figure, while also creating the ideal dress shape. It’s no surprise then, that Ms. White’s gowns take on an ethereal, dreamy quality. The bridal industry isn’t different than other fields when it comes to racial disparity.
Born in Nigeria, Yemi Osunkoya could often be found sketching bridal gown designs as a young child. Mr. Osunkoya, who started his line in 1991 in London, creates gowns that are embellished with lace, Swarovski crystals and details that make them elegant, classic and a bit over the top. But what really stands out about his gowns is that they’re created for every body shape.

Fortunately for us, in this day and age, there are plenty of wedding gowns out there, and famous designers from all over the world have created some of the most unique and fabulous wedding dresses over this past decade. Though not a new label, Elizabeth Fillmore’s bridal collection feels like an uncovered gem—its glamorous attire is designed for the new bride with a modern attitude. Based in New York, Elizabeth launched bridal in 1999 as a natural extension of her eveningwear line targeting a niche of women desiring sexy and romantic pieces.
There are also designs where accent colors are added to a traditional white wedding dress. Though Black History is made every day, this month I want to spotlight Black businesses in an industry that I once spent a lot of time thinking about – weddings! While it feels like it was so long ago, our wedding remains one of my most cherished memories. When Jonathan and I were planning our wedding, we made a commitment to support as many Black owned businesses as possible.
