So, you get a nice fitted dress at the top over the bust and the stomach area, but once it hits the hips, it starts to flare out. People enjoy the A-line design because it gives them the ability to hide a problem area that most women are self-conscious about and that is their hips and rear. Because the a-line flares out, it won’t cling to your hips, so if you aren’t very comfortable with that part of your body it is ok, you’ll be able to cover it up. You don’t want to have too much of an angle down though, or it may get to the point where the a-line is actually making you look bigger. The a-line dresses are probably most common for a wedding dress style. The majority of the wedding dresses that you will see are a-line dresses for the reason that they are easy to wear, they look great on basically any shape, and for women that are self-conscious it covers up an area that they have trouble shaping sometimes.
There are sleeveless, short-sleeve, long-sleeve, and off-the-shoulder A-line dresses, as well as A-line dresses with hems that end above knees, all the way down to full, floor-length skirts. The a-line dress style complements many different body types and is very popular since it helps create an ultra-feminine silhouette. By design, these special occasion a-line dresses are narrower at the top and then flare gently wider towards the hemline, making it easier to dance the night away. Women with a pear-shaped figure may find a-line dresses more forgiving in the hip area, while petite women seek a-line dresses in midi lengths to add an illusion of height and volume. If you have a slender figure, the a-line dress style adds curves to your look, while rounded body types can use a-line dresses to achieve a sleek slim look.

They have also graced the red carpet on numerous celebrities, including Taylor Swift, Hayden Panettiere, and Carrie Underwood. A-line clothes remained popular in the 1960s and 70s, disappeared from fashion almost completely by the early 1980s and were revived by the retro trend of the late 1990s. By that time, "A-line" was used more loosely to describe any dress wider at the hips than at the bust or waist, as well as a number of flared skirt styles. "True" A-line shapes on the pattern of Dior and Saint Laurent saw a revival in the early 2000s. An A-line skirt is a skirt that is fitted at the hips and gradually widens towards the hem, giving the impression of the shape of a capital letter A.
